PETER KONWITSCHNY

was born in Frankfurt/Main and grew up in

Leipzig, where his father Franz Konwitschny was conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra.. After his father's death in 1962, he studied Musical Theatre Direction in Berlin. From 1980 onwards he was stage director at many German theatres, later in Basel, Graz, Paris, Vienna and Barcelona...

At Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre in 2004, he directed Richard Wagner's The Flying Dutchman; 2006 in Copenhagen Elektra by Richard Strauss, 2009 the latter's Salome in Amsterdam. 2008 to 2011 Peter Konwitschny was Chief Stage Director of the Leipzig Opera. Since 2002, he holds an Honorary Professorship at the Berlin Music Academy "Hanns Eisler". He was awarded the Art Prize of the GDR, the Konrad Wolf Prize of the Academy for Fine Arts Berlin, the German Federal Order of Merit and the Berlin Theatre Prize of 2005. In addition, he is a member of the Academies of Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin and Hamburg.
